When you're traveling through Central Wyoming and the Bighorn Basin, you'll run into some interesting and historic places. The Wind River reservation, Wind River Canyon, the worlds largest hot springs in Thermopolis and Kirby, the home of Wyoming's first legal distillery.

I've always felt a special connection to Kirby, being my last name is the same, and enjoy dropping in to check on things from time to time. Anytime I'm in Kirby, I have to stop at Wyoming Whiskey.

In December I was there to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the whiskey, that has been one of my favorites since I was first stopped there in 2015, and their new tasting room.

Getting to learn about the process of what goes into making the whiskey and the story behind it, was pretty interesting.

Much of the influence that went in to making Wyoming Whiskey, came from one of the leading whiskey making states in the U.S., Kentucky. 95% of the worlds bourbon is produced in Kentucky, so when Brad and Kate Mead were looking to start Wyoming Whiskey with David Defazio, they went to Kentucky to find the person to help them begin.

Steve Nally was the first Master Distiller for the whiskey and prior to taking on the job at Wyoming Whiskey, he was at Kentucky based Maker's Mark for 30 years. After getting things rolling in Kirby, Steve is now in the Bourbon Hall of Fame.

Kentucky is also known for horse racing and one of the worlds biggest horse races is in Kentucky, The Kentucky Derby.

Combining whiskey and horse racing seems like the perfect combination. Wyoming Whiskey is giving you a chance to do just that. Saturday May 6th, the day of the derby, is the same day the Kirby Dirby is happening. It's going to be a fun filled day to get together, have a couple cocktails, where a cool hat and watch all the festivities of the Kentucky Derby.
