A question to all Wyoming news reporters: Are you a reporter or just a filling your content quota?

Every so often I come across a "study" about Wyoming that was simply copied and pasted with a few extra words to give it a local touch. Well, that sure has heck fills your content quota for the day.

But did you bother to fact-check it? Did you look for bias or an agenda?

Most of these "studies" were done by someone who merely Googled a few things and called it good. Chances are 99% that the person who wrote that "study" has never been to Wyoming. That's why so much if it is wrong.

Take for example the story I wrote, Another STUPID STUDY Says Wyoming Drivers are the Worst. There I showed the many flaws in the original story.

That driver story was posted on several Wyoming news outlets. Yet nobody bothered to fact-check it. Just cut and past and call it good.

All I had to do was ask a few basic questions about how the "study" was done and I found many flaws.

As a reporter, you should also be asking,
Why was the study done?
How was the study done?
Who did it?
Did they have a motive?
Is this "STUDY" actually propaganda?

For the love of all that is good and right in the world- DO NOT EVER cut and past a story from AP News. They get many details wrong and are one of the most bias media sources in America today. Always fact check and bias check them.

I'm not accusing Wyoming reporters of "FAKE NEWS." I'm saying that you are engaging in LAZY NEWS!

What is the job of a Wyoming News Reporter?

I would hope that any reporter is someone who enjoys the job and never wants to get bored with it.

I would hope that any reporter cares enough about the quality of work that they turn out to the public that they would never just cut and paste in order to fill their content quota.

I hope but I see that is not what is happening. These are among the top reasons people have lost faith in news media.

Question Everything. Dig For The Truth.

Recently a rather sketchy poll was put out saying that 65% of Wyomingites were in favor of Medicaid Expansion.

Once again, Wyoming news outlets just copied and pasted the poll without question.

Yet all I had to do was dig for just a few minutes to find that the poll should have never been considered legit in the first place. Why did not one single Wyoming reporter take a moment to question, maybe just poke around a little?

You can see my findings on that story at this link.

People Have Lost Trust In New Media.

Fewer than half of all Americans have trust in traditional media, according to data from Edelman's annual trust barometer shared exclusively with Axios. Trust in social media has hit an all-time low of 27%.

Some numbers show the trust level is lower than that. I mean, lower than congress low. That's about as bad as it gets.

But you can turn that around and make your profession something to be proud of, once again. With some hard worth people will actually be impressed that you are a reporter. Right now they are murmuring obscenities when you tell them what you do for a living.

Your Job Is Important. The Public Wants To Trust You.

But if you find yourself so bored and disinterested in what you are doing for a living then maybe you're in the wrong line of work.

Never be that guy who just shows up and puts in his time to collect a pay check.

The public is counting on you to sift through the &%$# and give us the facts and the truth. This takes extra time and work.

Making you and your news outlet a trusted source in news is not only good for your community, and your nation, it is job security as people then turn to someone they know they can trust - YOU!
